The Five Little Indians was formed in 2007 with the intention of creating original music. Three years later, they’ve notched up a series of impressive performances, from headlining the Hornbill Festival in Kohima, to opening for the raspy Richard Marx in Bangalore.
The band indulges in melodic rock, merging heavy sound with singer-songwriter sensibilities. Two of the Five Little Indians have Hindustani classical training, and taans and taranas regularly feature in the band’s compositions. “But it’s not fusion,” said Arka Das, the band’s drummer. “Classical vocals are worked into our sound, which is alternative rock, only if a song merits it.
We have a lot of songs without it as well.”
The band’s debut album is likely to be out by the end of the year and it won’t just be an internet release. “It will also be available as a CD,” said Das. “If we had it our way, we’d even put it out on LP.” Bangalore features prominently in the band’s plans. “It’s one of our favourite cities to play in,” said Das. “We thought it would be a metal city, but our originals were well received.” Darshan Manakkal |
